# For AI agents

> Which way into Hellotracks an AI agent should use, and how to start.

If you are an AI agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another) acting for a Hellotracks customer, this page tells you what to use.

## What to use

1. **Use the `ht` command line.** It is made for agents: one command per task, `--json` output, JSON errors with stable exit codes, `--dry-run` for bulk changes, and confirmation before deletes.
2. **If you can't run commands and can only make HTTP requests, use the [REST API](https://api-docs.hellotracks.com/v1/overview.md)** at `https://api.hellotracks.com/v1`. It is what `ht` uses underneath.
3. **Use the [JSON API](https://api-docs.hellotracks.com/api-reference/overview.md) (`/api/...`) when you are working on an integration that already uses it,** or when a person asks for it. It is the main API for developers and it is fully supported; new agent work just fits better on the two above.

## Start with `ht`

```bash theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://cli.hellotracks.org/install.sh | bash
ht skills install      # teaches Codex and Claude Code the rules below
```

Sign in with an existing account (a 6-digit code is emailed), or with an API key from the dashboard:

```bash theme={null}
ht auth login --email person@example.com
ht auth whoami
```

No account yet? `ht signup` creates a company; the person has to accept the terms of service, so ask them first.

## Rules that keep agents safe

* Discover commands with `ht commands --json` instead of guessing.
* Always pass `--json`. Output without it is for people and changes between releases.
* Run `import` and `sync` with `--dry-run` first and show the plan to the person.
* Don't pass `--yes` to deletes unless the person asked for that delete.
* Pass `--no-input` in scripts so `ht` never waits for a prompt.
* Never print the API key; let `ht` store it.
